Soul Eater-Resonance of the Soul

Soul Eater is a guide for followers of shounen action anime. Although the story is together consistent and concluded, the immoderate makeweight and the joint shounen oddities merely doesn’t make the experience rewarding for most temporary watchers.

Soul Eater Black☆Star Appearance

Black Star is a young boy of Japanese descent and is twelve to thirteen years of age. He has bright blue spiky hair, with the spikes sticking in out in the manner of a star-shape. He is rather short, not that much taller than Maka, but has a well-muscled build due to constant training. His eyes are green and when under the effects of madness, his eyes adopt star shaped pupils, which is seemingly a distinct trait of those belonging to the Clan of the Star. His main outfit is a sleeveless black shirt with a funnel-like collar, with white trousers that are black from the knee down and just a little short of being full length jeans. On the front of his collar, two short strips of grey material adorned with rivets stretch down fro, the top of the collar to the breast of his shirt. Black Star has similar strips wrapped around his neck in the form of a scarf, and around his waist in the form of a belt. Rivets can also be seen on his pockets and on the ends of his trousers. On his hand, he wears gray fingerless gloves with heavy wrist weights and has a band going across the back of each hand, adorned with a star. Black Star's footwear are basic black boots with white tips, with a star shape visible on the toe of each boot.
On his right shoulder is his star-shaped tattoo, showing his heritage as a member of the Star Clan which is just a shade lighter than his normal skin tone. In earlier concept art, this tattoo had a more complex design with black markings and a symbol in the centre.

As of joining Spartoi, Black Star now wears blue pants with the hemline rolled a few inches above his ankles, with white shoes and a white belt that is similar to an obi. His feet are wrapped in bandages up to his ankles and his hands and arms are also wrapped in bandages up to the elbow. As per his previous attire, Black Star wears a sleeveless top. In this case, it is a custom, white, muscle shirt. Another new addition is a long white scarf, wrapped around his neck with the majority hanged loosely. He also has a fairly noticeable scar running across his tattoo on his right deltoids, numerous smaller scars scattered across his arms, and a faint scar-line running down his right eye—all of which were caused by Mifune during their last match. The spikes in his hair are a lot messier and not as star-shaped. Black Star has also grown in height, almost equaling his partner, Tsubaki.
His soul is bright blue, and has numerous sliks coming out of it in the manner of his hairstyle. When Resonating with Tsubaki, various black tattoos appear around it.
In the Chapter of Lust in Eibon's Book, he is transformed into a girl. His build becomes similar to Tsubaki's, although his attire is still the same, apart from the fact that his trousers turn from blue to white. His hair becomes slightly shorter and no longer spiky, taking on a more feminine look. He is also well-endowed (a fact that he does not hesitate to declare incredibly loudly to his friends).

Soul Eater Black☆Star Personality

Black☆Star's soul, under the influence of Tsubaki's Uncanny Sword mode.

At the beginning of the series, Black Star starts off as rather arrogant, loud and immature. Although he fights as an assassin, he prefers to forget the Way of Assassination by shouting and making his presence known, the reason being that he is a massive attention-seeker. He cannot stand having someone else get more attention than himself, and will proceed to beat down anyone more popular than him so he can be popular again. His loudness is often shown in his tendency to often shout when he speaks and his trademark cries of 'Yahoo!' (ひゃっはあ! Hyahhaa! in Japanese).
His arrogance stems from the fact that he seems to exhibit a superiority complex. His delusion of 'starness' as he calls it (スター性 Sutaa Sei) is so great that he constantly gives out autographs that nobody wants, including when he signs Maka's face when she is recovering from a recent battle. According to Stein, Black Star's soul is 'a terribly self-absorbed soul.' His catchphrase is 'I will be the man who will surpass God,' which he is actually trying to do according to Stein. Because of this, he shows tacit jealousy towards Death the Kid. When referring to himself, Black Star uses an honorific (俺様 Ore-sama, literally translating to 'the great me') which shows he holds himself with high regard. He constantly refers to himself as 'BIG' and the other people around him as 'small.' His arrogance later develops into a constant hunger for power, up until the point that people suspect that he may choose the 'Path of the Demon.' His arrogance can also hinder him as he is short-tempered and uncooperative when it comes to team battles, as he always tries to take the lead when the most important thing is to cooperate with each other. He accuses the people around him for being sloppy instead of admitting that he is the one getting frustrated. His confidence stems from him being used to winning all the time, so consequently, losing prominent battles causes a great negative change in him, up until the point he loses his ability to use Soul Menace.

His hubris does not allow him to take any insults on his abilities, such as when he disregards Nygus when she tells him that he is only human. He can be unobservant, and has a short attention-span, as he is shown not to remember their battle plans on the Lost Island mission. He hates being told what to do and thus mostly disobeys the Shibusen rules, often skipping classes and arriving late because of picking fights with people. He likes fighting as he sees it as a chance of proving every one that he is the best. Another thing is that he is incredibly tactless, and can sometimes be disrespectful, even insulting to his friends and even his superiors. He often has an informal way of speech and behaviour, even towards people of a higher rank than him. He loves playing practical jokes and winding people up for the fun of it. He is also a big glutton, having a massive appetite. He seems to like manga, and is a fan of the fictional manga hero, Charisma Justice.

All of his methods of going about solving anything are generally headstrong and dependent on physical strength. From time to time, he will abandon Tsubaki if she tells him to hold back or run away, which ends him up in a worse situation. This might come from people mostly seeing him as a member of the Clan of the Star and judging him for their actions rather than his own. However, he does not hold grudges against Shibusen, the organization that had killed the Clan of the Star, saying that his father and mother had paid for their crimes, which shows a surprisingly mature side to Black Star's personality. He does not like to dwell on the past, and is therefore, quick to forgive people. He tries to forget his heritage, but deep down, he is shown to be insecure about it.

Despite his rather large ego, there are more positive sides to his personality. Although it is hard to tell through his arrogance, he does genuinely care for his friends. He always arrives to his friends' aid if they are in danger, seeing himself as a protector of the people whom he classes as weaker than himself. When Black Star saves Maka from Sid, the first thing he says when Maka thanks him is, 'You're small and I'm BIG. There's no problem about it.' It is shown in team battles, that he views the safety of his friends as a priority. However, he will also take his friends' wishes into account, and will step back and allow them to fight alone if they want to. He also has a determination that knows no bounds. He constantly trains to become stronger, and is dedicated on his goals, putting all of his effort in everything he does (this has its downsides, especially when Black Star develops tunnel-vision on pursuing something that is wrong, being too stubborn to see the wrongness of his aims). He prefers to go his own way, which sometimes involves going against orders. However, despite his determination, he always fails at tests of intellect regardless of the effort he spends in studying. He never forgives the people who hurts his friends, setting off immediately to get revenge in order to defend or restore respect to his friends.

He also has a very positive and upbeat temperament (although he has his short-tempered and cheeky side) often laughing and smiling even in the glummest of situations. His cheerful demeanour can sometimes act as a support to others when they are down. He is also very honourable, not wanting to take any credit that he does not deserve. Tsubaki also mentions that although he tries to hide it, Black Star would never want to stand out for doing something bad. He detests the idea of betrayal or deception, up until the point he is angered when he realizes that the fact that he had killed Mifune is kept a secret from Angela. He also keeps on ploughing forward through adversity, whilst others may decide to run away, showing his bravery, although his bravery may sometimes border on recklessness.

Mifune and Death the Kid are prominent figures in Black Star's life, and they help him mature profoundly. When Black Star is frustrated and indecisive in his pursuit of power, they both help him decide his choice in life. During and after the infiltration of Baba Yaga's Castle, Black Star changes dramatically. He retains most of his positive traits, remaining honourable and sincere both in and out of battle, and still cares for his friends, but most of his negative traits, like his arrogance and his temper, are no longer present. He no longer declares that he is going to surpass God, and he actually starts to admit his faults, saying that some people can do things that even he cannot do. He also develops more respect for his superiors, treating people more like equals. He is more cool-headed and focused in battle. He no longer pursues power in order to stand out and surpass God, but to protect his friends and help maintain order in the world. He decides not to take the 'Path of the Demon' but the 'Path of the Warrior' and he seeks to become a 'Warrior God' (武神 Bushin). He also develops a great sense of responsibility, as he decides to redeem the names of the ones fallen by the Uncanny Sword and to grant Masamune's wish to master the way of the warrior, even if it means causing suffering to some people.

However, he is still slightly immature. He can still be a little too informal and to people, and sometimes exhibits his usual headstrong and proud ways, but it does not go over a manageable level. His childish sense of humour still sometimes embarrasses people, especially Tsubaki.

In the Lust Chapter of the Book of Eibon, Black Star switches gender, and his personality becomes more feminine. He becomes a rather clingy and attention-seeking young girl. He changes back to his male form rather quickly, showing that he is not that lustful, despite his attempts to sneak into the bathroom to peek on a naked Tsubaki (which consequently causes him to start screaming at the sight of Tsubaki, which gives him away).

Soul Eater Black☆Star

Black☆Star (ブラック☆スター, Burakku☆Sutā) occasionally called Bla☆Star (ブラ☆スター Bura☆Sutaa) by Kirikou, is one of the main Meisters that the series follows. Black Star is the only survivor of the infamous Star Clan, which explains the star on his shoulder. His Demon Weapon partner is Tsubaki Nakatsukasa. He is a Shadow Weapon Meister (暗器職人 Anki Shokunin in Japanese) which is translated into Dark Arm Meister in the English dub. Currently, he is a Two-Star Meister and a member of the elite student unit, Spartoi.
He is exceedingly arrogant and loud-mouthed for an assassin, preferring to make a big entrance rather than to sneak up on his opponents, and tries to upstage anyone who gains more attention than he does. He frequently calls himself a "big" man destined to surpass God, thus driving himself to his physical limits and making him one of the most athletic students at DWMA. He is a skilled combatant even without a weapon, and has the power to utilize a technique called "Black☆Star Big Wave" (黒☆星ビッグウェーブ Koku☆sei Biggu Wēbu) to attack opponents with his soul wavelength. He is the sole survivor of the Star Clan, a family of ninjas who slaughtered for wealth until they were wiped out by DWMA, which took him in as an infant. He is oppressed by anyone who recognizes the clan's symbol, a star-shaped tattoo on his shoulder. Due to his obsession for power, some believe he will eventually descend down the path towards a kishin like his father. In the manga, he becomes a member of the elite meister unit Spartoí at DWMA. In the anime, Black Star participates in the battle against Asura alongside Maka and Death the Kid. He gets along very well with Soul.

Soul Eater Soul Evans Trivia

Soul's headband has a rectangular sticker with the word 'soul' and a circular sticker with a mouth and the letters E-A-T on it. This references his name, 'Soul Eater.' His headband looks a little different in the very first chapters of the manga.

His last name pays tribute to the famous American jazz pianist Bill Evans.

In Chapter 69, it appers that the round sticker with the 'E-A-T' letters that was on Soul's sweatband is now stuck to his locker.

In the official popularity poll taken by the manga's readers, Soul ranked 4th.

Part of his design may have come from Emine in Ohkubo's previous manga, B. Ichi. Both characters have white hair and red eyes and wear shoes with teeth marks on their soles.

Soul's theme song is, 'So Scandalous.' He also has a character song with Maka: 'Mauve Iro no Sympathy.'

Soul Eater Soul Evans Death Scythe Abilities

Form Manipulation: This allows Soul and Maka to change the appearance of Soul's Weapon form. To what extent is not yet known but they have been seen to manipulate the length of the scythe blade in Soul's Weapon form.

Flight: Through Soul Resonance with Maka's Grigori Soul, Soul can manifest wings in his Weapon form, allowing him and Maka to fly. The two debate over what sort of wings they want, and thus it takes a little time for them to achieve this ability. At first, Soul makes sharp spiky wings, which, although achieving momentary flight, is rejected by Maka due to their unattractive appearances. After yielding to Maka's wish for more 'fluffy' angel-like wings, Soul's wings take on the form of a tiny pair of feathery wings, which achieves flight, but with incredibly low speed. After settling their argument, Soul creates a pair of large strong feathery wings which allows them great speed and versatility in the air.

Soul Eater Soul Evans Abilities

Blade: Like most Demon Weapons, Soul can change a part of his body into his Weapon form; in his case, he can transform his entire arm into the blade of a scythe, or partially transform it from the elbow downwards to make it easier for fighting. The blade is shown to point in different directions when he trasforms his arm just below the elbow. When becoming a Death Scythe, Soul, rather like Spirit, can have his blade come out of his arm rather than having his entire arm transformed (unlike Spirit's blades, Soul's blade runs parallel to his arm and is longer and narrower). Despite having the ability to perform a partial transformation, Soul's use and threat to the enemy is greatly reduced in the absence of his partner, although he has displayed decent combat skill, shown in the first encounter with Free where he stabbed the werewolf and managed to knock one of his ice attacks away to protect Maka. In battle, he does exhibit rather strong will, proceeding to get up even after being injured several times, shown in his battle against Giriko. However, as stated by Kid, Soul's speed and slashing skills are of a low standard.

Anti-Demon Wavelength and Soul Perception Achieved Through Soul Resonance: Soul has been shown to take advantage of Maka's Soul Perception and Anti-Demon Wavelength during Soul Resonance. When resonating his soul with Maka's, he can sense souls as well as she can. As a musician, he senses souls by hearing their Wavelengths, instead of seeing them like Maka. When Resonating, he shares the Anti-Demon Wavelength from Maka, protecting himself from insanity.

Black Blood: Soul posseses the Black Room inside his mind, inhabited by Little Ogre, which is born when he is infected with the Black Blood. Once the Black Blood is activated, Soul can allow it to invade the blood stream of those performing Soul Resonance with him. The Black Blood gives Soul and his infected partner(s) immense strength, at the cost of Soul, and possibly his partner, plunging into madness. Soul only uses this strength as a last resort, although Little Ogre constantly tempts him, playing on his dismay of not being a powerful Weapon on his own. However, as Soul gains more control over the insanity, he becomes gradually able to only draw out the strength of the Black Blood, and not the madness that comes with it. This does seem to strain him after overuse, however, as he has not learned to fully control it yet. When he uses too much power, he accidentally activates the Black Blood, although he still has control over its madness.

Piano: Soul's talent as a pianist becomes very useful as the series progresses, as he develops the ability to manipulate Wavelengths by treating the Soul Wavelengths of people like music. One thing he can do with this ability is create a perfect Chain Resonance even under impossible conditions. Inside the Black Room in his soul, he plays a piano, creating soundwaves and a rhythm that all the Soul Wavelengths of the Resonating individuals can follow. His piano-playing thus creates an almost perfect Resonance, and the team under his control can attack with great strength and fluidity in their movements. The team members of his Resonance rely on him to maintain the Resonance. Soul can also control their speed and efficiency in combat. By increasing the tempo of the song, the team members gain speed in their attacks, and by striking certain chords, their attack strength increases. He can also do the inverse of this i.e. slow down a person. He can also spread his partner Maka's Anti-Demon Wavelength through his piano, sometimes through great distances (he needs a medium to send the soundwaves through for this to be possible, though). After becoming a Death Scythe, he gains the ability of spreading Wavelengths using Arachne's ability of using spider webs. This makes his piano more powerful and he no longer needs a medium as he provides one himself. By playing the opposite sounds of a person's Wavelength on his piano, he can disrupt and incapacitate an opponent. Although this ability is invaluable, Soul risks falling deeper and deeper into the insanity of the Black Blood if he plays too long, and thus limits his playing time. He also needs Maka's Soul Perception in order to sense everyone else's Soul Wavelengths, meaning he cannot use his ability alone.

Soul Eater: Crona

soul eater cosplay - cronaThe child of Medusa Gorgon, Crona is a Demon Sword Master whose weapon, Ragnarok, resides permanently in his/her body. He/she is androgynous in appearance, and is presented with an ambiguous gender throughout the series. Although there have been hints towards Crona’s gender in both directions, nothing definitive has been presented.

Beautiful cosplay! Although I’m not sure whose weapon is in the foreground of this photo since I’m not familiar with the series. Could it be Maka’s scythe? Thanks to Aerie for suggesting this!

Soul Eater Soul Evans History

Maka's soul (left) and Soul's soul (right)

Soul came from an extremely rich family of musicians. He had an older brother called Wes, a violinist, whom he suffered an inferiority complex to, and although he himself had a talent for playing the piano, he was reluctant to exhibit this talent because he constantly knew that Wes was better than him. After finding out that he was a Demon Weapon however, he found that he was able to escape from his family tradition as musicians and strive to become a Death Scythe instead. Evidence seems to show that he was the first Demon Weapon in the Evans family.
One day while playing the piano he was approached by Maka Albarn who had previously witnessed his ability to turn into a scythe. She asked him to become her partner and Weapon as her dream was to make a Death Scythe for Shinigami-sama; emphasizing on the word scythe, and as such had denied every possible Weapon put in front of her at DWMA. Maka also stated Soul had felt like the first person she could trust, furthermore, performing as Weapon and Meister should be figuratively easier. Soul accepted the agreement with the words 'Sure, sounds cool.' From that point on the two worked together, gathering Kishin Eggs prior to the beginning of the main story.

Soul seems to prefer to forget his past life as a musician, as he dislikes being called by his full name, including his last name, 'Evans.'

Soul Eater: Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson, Death the Kid, and Patricia "Patty" Thompson

soul eater cosplay - elizabeth liz thompson, death the kid, and patricia patty thompsonDue to Death the Kid's severe obsessive-compulsive disorder for symmetry, he chose to wield twin demon guns known as the Thompson sisters. Liz and Patty take the form of semi-automatic pistols that compress Kid’s soul wavelength to create energy bullets ranging from destructive blasts to painful, non-wound-inducing shots. Kid refuses to fight using one while the other is missing, but is able to fight without them nonetheless. He can also summon a flying skateboard known as Beelzebub for transportation as well as a weapon.

Beautiful cosplay! Too bad it’s a fairly small image and we can’t see the details too well. Thanks to Aerie for this contribution!

Soul Eater Soul Evans Appearance

Soul has white hair swept to one side, and red eyes. He is known for his heavily exaggerated facial expressions and pointed teeth. He naturally has a lazy, droopy, and somewhat uninterested expression on his face. In his first appearance, he wears a yellow and black jacket with buttons going down the front. Around his head is a prominent sweatband that has a sticker with his name on and a round logo featuring a red-lipped mouth bearing pointed fangs surrounded with the letters 'E-A-T.' He wears a pair of maroon pants, and yellow and black sneakers with a pattern on the soles resembling his teeth. In Episode 14, it is revealed that he wears blue boxers with pictures of bones all over them (a reference to Ohkubo's previous manga, B. Ichi). When seen bare-chested or naked, it is shown that he has a large scar going diagonally down his torso from the left shoulder to the right waist. These are from the operation Professor Stein preformed after Crona attacked him during their first encounter.
His soul is light blue with the top resembling his hair and is also the Soul Eater series logo. It can be seen on the back his first jacket.

Beyond Episode 25 and Chapter 24, Soul wears a hairband with new clothing consisting of a black (apparently leather) jacket, an orange T-shirt with the logo on his sweatband emblazoned on the left breast (this may only be visible in episode 49 when he collapses) and a pair of light brown pants, instead of his original headband and old clothing.
In his Spartoi uniform, Soul has kept to his fondness of wearing a jacket. This time, it is a custom, white (possibly military) jacket, with the Spartoi logo on the left shoulder with a small clip strapped to the collar, for closing. Underneath the jacket, he wears a tucked-in, closed, white dress shirt with a tie. He is normally seen without the jacket on. He wears blue pants, white belt, and white shoes.

When he meets with Little Ogre inside his soul in the Black Room, Soul wears a pin-striped black suit with a red dress shirt, black tie, and matching black shoes. He does not wear a hair band in this outfit.

Upon entering the first Chapter of Lust in the Book of Eibon, alongside Maka and other members of Spartoi, his appearance greatly changed in that his gender was switched to female for the remainder of the chapter. In this form, he resembles Maka in appearance, having long hair with a fluffy hairband visible beneath. The clothes are similar to the female Spartoi outfit, with the sailor suit collar, but with the difference that it is more like a dress. He wears a blouse with puffed up sleeves with some subtle flower petal patterns on the hem. The signature tie of the Spartoi uniform has been tied up to be in a bow-shape. He wears a silky skirt that goes down to his knees and white shoes. After reaching the Envy Chapter, he turns straight back to his normal gender.

In Weapon form, he takes on the form of a scythe with a long grey, staff-like haft. Despite probably being of a metal-like material, the haft is capable of bending, sometimes at incredibly drastic angles. The scythe blade is black and red, with the two colours separated by a zig-zagged line going along the blade. Next to the blade is a prominent decor in the shape of an elliptical red eye with a black pupil, framed by a dark grey outline with a line extending out of the outline at the two points of the eye. The eye is capable of moving according to Soul's emotions. It widens when he is surprised, narrows when he is angry, and when he ends up unconscious after being devoured by the Black Blood in the anime, the red eye disappears to signify this. Below the eye is a triangular zig-zagged pattern, split with the colours dark grey and light grey. A slight extension, a bar with three holes punched through it, is seen next to the eye, opposite to the blade.

When Soul becomes a Death Scythe, his Weapon form takes on a slightly different appearance. The prominent eye is now framed by gold metal, which goes around the eye and then splits into two strands of metal, which latch themselves onto the edge of the blade. The slight extension with the three holes is replaced by small wing-shaped objects, one red and one black. These wings can become bigger to enable flight. The blade's curve is also sharper, and the zig-zagged line separating the black and red is gone, with only three zig-zags and the rest a straight line.

Soul also occasionally rides a motorcycle, which acts as a form of alternate transportation for him and Maka. The bike is orange and yellow and is a two-seater for the Weapon and Meister. A small metal ornament in the shape of a monster's head is seen on the front, with the monster's single 'eye' functioning as a headlight. The number plate at the back has his name on it instead. There are red streamers on the handlebars. At the start of the manga, Soul's bike has the same appearance, but later on, its elaborate design changes to the appearance of a regular motorcycle with no distinguishing features in particular.

Soul Eater Soul Evans Personality

Soul playing the Piano.

“ Cool men don't cheat on their partners. ”
—Soul Eater, Chapter 0.1

At the start of the series, Soul's personality is laid-back and nonchalant, as he tries to mold himself to his expectations of how someone 'cool' would act. He is almost the complete opposite of Maka, being calm, reserved and aloof. He often expresses how he feels about some situations by either claiming that something is 'cool' or 'not cool.' Being a supposedly cool guy, he prefers to use the direct approach which most of the time fails (although after maturing, he no longer does this). He has a unique love for eating souls that seems to not be shared by many of the other Weapons, drooling quite frequently when his next meal is nearby. He also seems to be a glutton towards food in general. He can sometimes become too driven by the thought of eating souls, which leads him to bicker with Maka or become impatient with her, but despite their squabbles, they are always able to maintain a solid friend-partner relationship. He is also friends with Black Star because of their similar personalities, but at the same time they cannot match their Wavelengths. He is slightly immature, being headstrong, stubborn, apathetic to most things and argumentative. He also has a strong weakness towards women, as he bursts into a nosebleed without fail every time he sees Blair naked. He is also a slacker that likes to find an easier way out of situations, shown when he attempts to cheat in a DWMA exam.
However, one thing he has gained from all the years of being 'cool' is he is possibly one of the most loyal people one could possibly meet, especially since breaking promises and changing sides 'isn't at all cool in the least.' Deep down, he is always looking out for his friends, and is even willing to sacrifice himself in order to protect his partner, Maka, showing his bravery and dedication. Despite his usual unenthusiastic appearance, he proves to be actually quite determined, and he also helps people get back on their feet when they are at a loss. He is also quick-thinking and cunning at times.

After the rise of Asura, however, Soul's personality greatly matures (mostly because of his awareness that he must grow stronger to combat the strong insanity released into the world), and his stubborn and headstrong demeanor is replaced by a more cool-headed and serious one. He remains remarkably calm and composed no matter how dire the situation is and has impressively deep insight on various situations and people, often noticing important points no one else had thought of. He also shows a good deal of sense and judgment, which is well-respected by his peers. He begins to show more awareness and understanding towards people, up until the point that he even lectures some of the other characters when they are too stubborn to see some situations clearly, although he sometimes thinks it best to leave people to figure things out on their own. Since he is infected by the Black Blood, he runs the risk of being overcome by madness. Because of Soul's constant grapple with the Black Blood and Little Ogre inside his soul, he has a good degree of self-control as well, and rarely gives in to his emotions. He has demonstrated extremely strong willpower, being able to hold onto both his and Maka's sanity whilst using the Black Blood against Crona. He still has a compassionate side, proving to be a good loyal friend to others, and is still willing to do anything he can to protect his Meister.

However, he seems to suffer from low esteem and is not confident in himself. He is saddened of his inferiority to Weapons like Justin and Giriko and cringes at the thought of his brother, Wes, who is a superior musician to him. He also conflicts frequently with Little Ogre in his mind. He keeps most of these problems to himself, and seems reluctant to share his problems with others, which sometimes makes him appear harsh and almost cold. He is mostly seen frowning or scowling, and most of his smiles are somewhat sarcastic. He is rather pessimistic, and is slightly aloof and detached from others, and he admits that he shares Crona's fear of bonding with people. At the DWMA anniversary party, he is seen outside on the balcony by himself rather than with the others, and does not tell Maka of his Black Blood infection and his dreams of Little Ogre, although this is mainly because he does not want to worry her. He still has a kind-hearted side, although he shows this side the most to Maka.

In the first Chapter of Lust in the Book of Eibon, Soul's personality undergoes a bit of a change to suit his switched gender. Although sarcastic as he usually is, he is also a little stuck-up and haughty, and his behavior goes on to annoy his partner, Maka. His personality returns to normal after leaving the first Chapter. He quickly reverts to his true male appearance alongside Maka, which means he does not possess much lustful thoughts (which is ironic because of his constant nosebleeds upon seeing Blair's naked body).
Soul also has a talent for playing the piano. His Meister, Maka, reveals that when they first met he played a dark song for her on the piano. Apart from this however, he is reluctant to play in front of people as he 'doesn't know what he's capable of.' The reason for his talents with the piano is that he comes from a family of musicians. His brother, Wes, is a famous violinist. However, Soul wanted to break off from his family tradition of being a musician. When he found out that he was a distant descendant of weapons, he used his ability as a excuse in order to leave his family. Soul also claims that the songs he plays on the piano are ones of madness. However, his love of music still remains, and he seems to open up a little when it comes to music. He has good musical taste, and personally seems to like jazz music. He also seems to have an eye for architecture (he claims that Blair's pumpkin house is 'cool' and later says that he likes Gothic architecture).
When Stein sees his soul, he evaluates that Soul has a, 'twisted and sarcastic soul.' Soul sometimes shows a dark and sarcastic sense of humour, that usually annoys most people, especially Maka.

He owns a motorcycle, which he and Maka use as transportation. As a member of a renowned musician family, Soul is a talented pianist, but desired to break ties from the family tradition and, using his discovery that he was a demon weapon as an excuse to leave, decided to pursue the goal of becoming the most powerful Death Scythe ever. Soul Eater Maka Albarn Brew

Maka, Kid, Black Star, Ox, Kirikou, and Kim and their respective Weapons are the group of kids chosen for fighting to obtain Brew, a powerful Demon Tool, before Arachnophobia.
When Stein and Marie, the duo responsible for retrieving Brew in the vortex of Lost Island, take too long to reappear, the group begins to worry. Ox, Kirikou, and Kim decide to stay behind and take care of the forces opposing them. With that, Maka, Black Star, and Kid enter the vortex. The first thing they notice is Death and that the vortex is a sort of frozen time anomaly repeatedly showing the events that led to the explosion on the island.
Kid explains that what they see is Shinigami from the Grim Times, before he built Shibusen. The group then hurries to a temple. When they reach, they notice a large mass of Witches — one of them being Arachne. They hear Arachne speak about blowing up the island and everything relating to Brew. The group proceeds and soon meet Marie and Stein. Because Marie and Stein are overstaying in the vortex, they are in danger of becoming a part of the time anomaly. Maka and the others tell them to retreat and decide that they will take on the mission of retrieving Brew.
They eventually bump into Mosquito, carrying Brew. He then reverts to his from from 100 years ago and prepares to battle them. Before the battle can start, though, a hologram of Eibon appears. Black Star decides not to waste time and attacks Mosquito, ignoring the presence of Eibon. Maka follows suit and, eventually, Kid brings himself to ignore Eibon and attacks Mosquito, too. None of their attacks, however, are penetrating the tough hide of Mosquito. Mosquito then uses his immense strength to overpower the kids. Luckily, Soul comes up with the idea of Chain Resonance and augmenting it with his music. The group laugh as they hear he is going to play the piano in his soul. When Soul asks why they are laughing, Maka replies that they had finally got Soul to play the piano for them.
Soul plays the piano, giving everyone a rush of power, enabling them to manoeuvre flawlessly around each other and link their attacks with ease. They are easily able to overcome Mosquito with both their speed and strength. Ultimately, their combined strength allows them to damage Mosquito and Kid manages to connect a Death Cannon, and Black Star attacks with his Uncanny Blade, which destroys both of Mosquito's arms. Before they can finish him off, Soul stops playing, advising them to leave as their time limit for staying in the vortex is almost up. Maka protests, but has no choice but to agree. Since Mosquito can revert to an even younger form of himself, he can remain in the vortex for longer, and the group have no choice but to retreat without BREW. In the anime only, Maka continues on to activate the Majin Hunt and bisects Mosquito horizontally, but he escapes by detaching his head from his body. Soul then tells everyone that it's time to leave.
On their way out, they meet up with Kirikou and Ox, who help escort them out of the vortex. They leave and watch how the Witch's research facility is destroyed by an explosion, though that, too, is a hologram from years past. When they exit the vortex they are greeted by a distraught Marie, who makes a move to strike them, but instead hugs them all for making it out safe, but soon threatens that they will all have a talking with her back at Shibusen.
Maka calls Shinigami and reports in on the failed mission. After doing so, she sits next to Soul on the boat that is bearing them back to Shibusen.

Soul Eater Maka Albarn Duel Art

Black Star joins Maka and Kid and their partners outside to practice their Chain Resonance. Stein warns them that if they do not succeed, then they will be removed from his class. With this said, Maka warns Black Star in particular to do this properly, but he insists that he always does. Despite this, the three students fail multiple times, which angers Maka. She believes that Black Star is the blight of the failures. She starts arguing with him, but Kid steps in between them, and Stein decides to give them a break to cool down.
Maka confronts Stein with the purporse of removing Black Star from the team. She fails at this and returns to the group. Black Star then accuses her of tattling to Stein and being selfish. This infuriates Maka, bringing her to try to punch him, but fails. Kid tries to diffuse the situation, but Soul steps in and tells him to leave the two to sort it out on their own. Maka tries to punch him again, and this time, Black Star allows her to hit him. Black Star then warns Maka that, if this goes on any further, it sould be a duel, and he would be sure to crush her. With that said, Maka curses at the top of her lungs and runs off in tears.
Maka is soon visited by Tsubaki. Tsubaki tells her that it is all right for friends to fight sometimes and and Maka admits of her envy towards Black Star because of his strength. After some talking Maka comes to terms with her mistake and, realizing that she had ended up abandoning her team, eagerly goes to apologize. However, on the way, she gets nervous as she does not know what to say, and is met by Soul. She asks him if he had come to laugh at her, and Soul pauses before replying that the laughter should wait until after they had succeeded the Chain Resonance. Returning to the group, she apologizes to Black Star, who forgives her. The group resume their training and succeed, with Maka understanding everyone elses' souls and putting all of her trust into her companions. Stein then makes Maka the leader of the group. Later that night as they are heading home, Maka lets Black Star hit her to make up for how she hit him earlier. To everyone's surprise, he ends up hitting her hard and, though apparently bruised after beign sent flying, Maka smiles and says, 'Ouch.'

Soul Eater Maka Albarn Part in the Story

Reunion Express
Maka is seen at a party with all her other friends thrown in celebration for her recovery. She comforts Crona with everyone else, who is still getting used to having people around him/her. When Maka asks Soul to play the piano, he refuses and goes to the bathroom. When Liz asks what kind of songs he plays, Maka replies that Soul plays really dark and strange songs.
When the party ends, the group splits up.

The Corner of The Room
The group again try to make Soul play the piano for them. Their efforts still remain fruitless. Soul tells everyone that his songs are not worth listening too. Maka objects, telling him that she had liked the song Soul had played for her once. Soul, frustrated for some reason, tells her that she only likes his music because of her low Musical IQ. Maka defends her love of trance fusion music, which is immediately made fun of by the others. She attempts to bring Crona into the conversation, but he/she quickly retreats and excuses him/herself. Maka wonders on his/her strange behaviour.

Legend of the Holy Sword
Maka only briefly appears in this special chapter alongside Soul. Witnessing Hiro being bullied around by the other students, she sympathetically comments that Hiro would have been more popular if he went to a normal school, since he is too shabby here at the DWMA.
